How to Find Your Personal Style When Shopping for Clothes Online

As we grow older, our fashion sense and personal style are bound to change. What fun would it be if they didn’t, right? It’s only natural to try and keep up with what’s trending. If you see your favorite celebrity wear a stylish blazer shirt, you might want to try it for yourself. Tomorrow when the same celebrity wears a pair of dazzling sequin pants, you might want to try those too. There’s a new trend every other day - making it all that more important to find your personal style. Online shopping makes it easy to browse through millions of options within minutes. But it’s equally important to segregate and not get lost in all those options. While a camo jacket for women might look appealing in theory, a neon jacket for women might suit your style better. It’s about finding what you’re comfortable wearing and not just wearing something because it’s trending.

We’ve compiled a few handy tips to help you find your personal style when you’re shopping for clothes online, so you only buy what’s best for you!

1. Understand your style preferences

Fashion and style is initially all about trying out different types of clothes. You could try to pair a women’s crop jacket with your cargo pants that you bought online, or you could pair a blazer shirt with some stylish sequin pants. The combinations are endless, and that’s why it’s important to understand your preferences.

You could eliminate some options from the get go. Think about what kind of colors you like, and whether you’re someone who prefers prints and patterns over plain clothes. If you’re someone who likes plain clothes, looking for cargo pants online will be a waste of your time. Other things to consider are whether your style is more casual, more formal or more electric.

2. Create a mood board

This one is our favorite! We love creating mood boards of any kind, especially when it comes to shopping online. Pinterest can be a great place to start, and you can have a visual representation of the kind of clothes you want to buy. If you simply search for co ord sets in the Pinterest search bar, it will throw multiple options which you can pick and choose from. You can also have a look at the accessories that pair with an outfit best. So the next time you’re looking for a womens camo jacket or a womens neon jacket, you’ll know which accessories would look best with either of them.

3. Be basic

If you’re unsure where to start, it’s always best to start with something you know you like, and then experiment by adding some variation to it. For example, if you know you’re already comfortable with blue jeans, you can try to add something new by getting a waist coat online. This is a great way to experiment, as you’re pairing something as versatile as blue jeans with something new. If the waist coat doesn’t work out, you could always switch things up with a more electric looking womens jacket. This way, you’re keeping things simple and not going overboard with experimentation.

4. Trend with caution

Trends are all fun and games until you have a wardrobe that you hate. If you jump on a trend and buy cargo pants online, but they don’t go with any of the tops in your wardrobe, you’re going to end up regretting the purchase. Similarly, if you buy a ladies crop jacket online because it’s trending, but you don’t have any pants to pair it with, it’s going to end up being sitting in your wardrobe for ages. So follow the trend, but only buy clothes that fit naturally with what you already have in your wardrobe.

5. Consider your lifestyle

Imagine buying a neon jacket when most of your social engagements are more formal. Looking up a co ord set online would’ve been much better in this situation. That’s why it’s important to consider your lifestyle before buying anything online. Think about what you would wear to work, what most of your social commitments look like and what your overall routine looks like. You don’t want to end up buying something because it looks cool online, but you never get a chance to wear it because your lifestyle is completely different.

6. Utilize virtual trial rooms

It’s not as odd as it sounds! A lot of retailers have leveraged technology so you can pair different types of clothes in a trial room online. If the online store you’re browsing through does have this option, make sure you check it out. This can be extremely handy in visualizing how certain pairings might look, and you can try them based on size as well - so you can visualize how a particular piece will look on you.

7. Trust your gut

You know you best, and no one can argue with that! So whenever you’re shopping online, remember to trust your gut because more often than not, it’ll be your subconscious brain trying to remind you of your likings. It’s more important to feel confident and comfortable than to wear something just to fit in. If you’ve never worn sequin pants before and your gut tells you that they’re too far away from your comfort zone, try looking at other options. You can always look for cargo pants online or try and see if a co ord set is more your jam.

While these are some tips to help you find your style, eventually it all comes down to you and what you’d rather wear. By discovering your style - mixed with some experimentation and splurging - you can build a wardrobe that truly embodies you as a person.
